How to Plane Maple and Wine Barrel Cutting Board Blanks
Batch Size: 12
Time Standard: 30 minutes
Cut short edges flush so you remove the cardboard epoxy dam. Taking about half a blade width on the edge should do the job. The important thing is making sure all the hot glue between the wood and the cardboard has been removed so it doesn't gunk up the planer.
Before sending it through the planer use a handplane to knock down any high spots from glue drips so it is as flat as possible on the back.
Plane with the top side up*. The goal should be to sneak up on the cut, being too aggressive could chip out epoxy and remove extra wood. Once enough has been planed off to remove glue lines and make the entire surface level STOP.
*If the top of the cutting board is concave, plane the bottom first until it is flat and no glue lines appear, then do the top.
Plane the bottom side until all the glue lines are gone. This should probably only take a quarter turn down on the planer. Once again, the goal is to minimize the amount of material that is removed in the planing step.
